Graphics FAQ

I don't know how to assemble my graphics ideas into a complete CD package. Can you help?

Yes! For those who want to create the graphics themselves, please follow our step-by-step CD Packaging Guide. If you'd prefer to have an experienced designer work on your packaging, CDForge's in-house graphic design team can help you out.

Why shouldn't I create my text in Photoshop?

Photoshop is a pixel based program. When you create text in Photoshop it is created by many small pixels and will be jagged when printed. When you create text as vector images, it is created by a line between vector points and is crisp, clean and easy to read. We cannot emphasize enough: DO NOT CREATE TEXT IN PHOTOSHOP OR IT WILL PRINT POORLY.

What is a Topspine UPC?

A Topspine UPC Sticker is a sticker that is applied over a closed Jewel Case (they do not fit so well on Digipaks, but we can still do them for an extra fee). Almost all major label releases use them, so if you just go to a local record store you will be able to see them. The Topspine has the following information on it:

Band/Artist Name, Release Title, Catalog Number, Bar Code Number & Image.

Topspine stickers are not required, but they are a good option for those who do not want to place the bar code into their artwork but still need a bar code. There is not graphics set up needed for these, just make sure your Quote and Order form reflect that you want Topspines on your CD.

What is the difference between Panels, Booklets, and Folders?

A "panel" is defined as a printable square. Imagine a 4 Panel folder as a book cover with no pages inside. You have 2 printable panels (pages) on the front and 2 printable panels (pages) on the inside.

Folder = a printed insert with Folds.
Booklet = a printed insert with STAPLES.

What is CMYK / four color process? What does 4/1 and 4/4 mean?

Four-color process refers to the method used to print CD Folders, LP Jackets, Digipaks, or any other kind of printed material in full color. The four colors are Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and BlacK. When percentages of these colors are combined, these combinations can produce every color in the color spectrum.

4/1 = CMYK (outside) / Black & White (inside)
4/4 = CMYK (all sides)

What is a PMS Color?

The Pantone Matching System (PMS) is a color system that assigns a numbering system to specific colors, and shade of those colors. You need to set up the CD or DVD Face Files in 3 or less Coated PMS Colors. We accept, but do NOT recommend using CMYK for the CD or DVD Face.

Will I get my master, booklets, and film back with my CDs?

Not automatically. However, you may specifically request that they be returned (there will be additional shipping/handling charges). Most of our clients for convenience leave their extra printed materials at the plant since the materials are stored in a secure environmentally controlled vault until you need to repress your project. Glass Stampers, Plates, and CD Face Films will not be returned since these are property of the plant and are not transferable. WE WILL STORE YOUR AUDIO MASTER FOR ONE YEAR. After that time we are no longer liable for the materials.
